Ryan Coppage
Featured Local Artist and Author
Ryan Coppage is from the western coal fields of Kentucky which is sometimes acknowledged as the south, sometimes Appalachian, and occasionally both. He fell in love with clay during his time at Murray State University under John Utgaard. After his second elective was pottery there was no going back. He continued taking pottery classes on the side through a BS, MS, and PhD in chemistry, -- after being adopted by BFA and MFA programs at Murray State, the University of Kentucky, and the University of Miami. Fifteen pottery classes later, he now does glaze research with undergraduate students at the University of Richmond, publishes both art-flavored science manuscripts in scientific journals and science-flavored art papers in ceramics monthly and ceramics technical. At 22 years in clay, Ryan designs glazes for student research projects and fusses over pottery aesthetics and handles in his book, The Anatomy of a Good Pot . Get it on Amazon
